OcampoWang Dance

Evelyn (Chien-Ying) Wang, from Taiwan and Paul C. Ocampo, from the Philippines have been making dances and dancing together for two decades. OcampoWang Dance was established in 2010. Their works have been presented in Taiwan, Singapore, Japan, China, Indonesia, the Philippines, and in the United States. Karen Anne Webb described their work as “about a world-embracing approach to culture”. Collectively, Wang and Ocampo have been commissioned by Philippine Ballet Theatre, Ballet Philippines, Singapore Dance Theatre, Juedai Contemporary Dance Theater (Taiwan), Lustig Dance Theatre, Repertory Dance Theater, The Ohio State University, Boston Conservatory at Berklee, University of Virginia, University at Buffalo, Indiana University, DeSales University, National Taiwan University of Arts, TongJi University (Shanghai), and Beijing Normal University (China), to name a few.  

 

Wang, a finalist of Bogliasco Fellowship is an Associate Professor at Rutgers University while Ocampo, a recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship was an Associate Professor at Southern Utah University before joining Rutgers. The company’s work has been supported by Dance New Jersey, the Consulate General of Spain in New York, Salt Lake City Arts Council, Utah Arts Council, and YongLin Foundation in Taiwan. They produced Bridging Bridges, an evening-length work. Linda C. Smith, Artistic Director of Repertory Dance Theater said: "I greatly admire them. You don't see that many married couples collaborating on a concert. ... They've created a gentle, feel-good evening, and they create a magic when they're onstage together." In a review of a curated festival, Roslyn Sulcas of The New York Times singled out their work Equanimity for its professional standards of choreography and performance.

Paul C. Ocampo, Co-Artistic Director of OcampoWang Dance, received his MFA from The Ohio State University. He choreographed and performed with Ballet Philippines and Singapore Dance Theatre altogether for seventeen years. With these companies, he performed extensively and participated in numerous International Festivals. He was awarded the Shell-NAC Young Artist Award and is a recipient of scholarships from National Arts Council (Singapore), Lee Foundation, and Howell Dance Fund. A keen learner of different languages, he has received a Labanotation Teacher Certification. Paul has worked with many illustrious choreographers including: Joe Alegado, Gener Caringal, Jean Paul Commelin, Zvi Gotheiner, Susan Hadley, Goh Soo Khim, Agnes Locsin, Graham Lustig, Bebe Miller, Douglas Nielsen, Alice Reyes, Denisa Reyes, Anthony Then, Victoria Uris, Edna Vida, Norman Walker, Leigh Warren, and many more. Ocampo was awarded the Utah Arts Council Individual Artist Project Grant to present Bridging Bridges. He has also been invited as a guest artist with Repertory Dance Theatre in Salt Lake City, Utah, DeSales University, University at Buffalo, De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, Beijing Normal University and National Taiwan University of Arts. His work has been presented in Japan, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and in the United States. Paul performed a work co-choreographed with Evelyn (Chien-Ying) Wang at Manhattan Movement Arts Center in NYC which Roslyn Sulcas of the New York Times gave high accolades. Paul is a recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship and was an Associate Professor at Southern Utah University before joining Rutgers.
